Since the Linguaphone Institute was founded in 1901, close
links, with the academic world have been maintained. Jacques
Roston, the founder and pioneer of self-study language course,
was himself advised by distinguished scholars in the field
of language learning. Of all such advisors, the best known
was Daniel Jones, probably the best known phonetician in this
century and author of the definitive 'English Pronouncing
Dictionary'. In 1967, Linguaphone's relationship with the
academic world was formalised with the appointment of an Academic
Advisory Committee(AAC). The Committee has been enlarged over
the years to deal with the continuing demands placed on it
so that Linguaphone courses continue to maintain their high
quality. It now consists of eight representatives from different
specialist fields of language including linguistics, phonetics,
language assessment and examination, lexicography and the
cultural background to language. The AAC is chaired by Professor
the Lord Quirk, Dlitt, FBA. Each of the eight members of the
Committee is acknowledged as an eminent practitioner in his
or her field with an impressive and distinguished record of
specialist achievement.
